Well, look who was in town when we visited Auckland in March – the Volvo Ocean Race! They had started from Alicante, Spain, back in October 2014; Auckland was the end of leg 4, over 22,000 nautical miles from the start. Seven boats are competing; Vestas Wind ran onto a reef in the Indian Ocean – oops – and Dong Feng was out for a sail on Auckland Harbour. The five boats here are (from left) Abu Dhabi, Brunel, Alvimedica, MAPFRE and SCA.
There was an in-port race the next day (Saturday March 14), and leg 5 was planned to start on Sunday March 15, but was postponed until Wednesday March 18 due to Cyclone Pam, which had devastated Vanuata and then moved south to be east of New Zealand.
